Mini Journal: Me and Chiari Day 4

It’s been a bit since I wrote. I had the chance to go to Expo West, which is a huge health food show in California. It was a lot of walking, a lot of eating, and a lot of socializing. I had a great time, but I’m now playing catch up on all the things that were neglected while I was gone. There were so many great brands there! RX Bar Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Square Organics Hippeas Stonyfield Kind Bar There were so many exhibitors….and so many people! About 50,000 of ’em. It was a tad crowded. I had some major...

Mini Journal: Me and Chiari Day 3

Well, I haven’t been writing because I was sick. Just a bad cold, but it sucked away my will to live. Ha! Anyway, I’m back and we finally have some sunshine. Isn’t it amazing how much the sun energizes you and makes you feel more positive about life? I’m always shocked about that after it’s been hiding for a few days. If you have chiari, have you noticed a change in symptoms when a weather front comes in? I definitely have worse headaches and my bum elbow gets very sore. I think those are words my grandma used to...

Mini Journal: Me and Chiari Day 2

So, today is my 41st birthday and all I want is this headache I’ve had for the past two weeks to go away. I’m so over it. I’ve tried meds, massage, chiropractor…nothing helps. I’m almost starting to think that I have a virus in my head. That’s one of the weird things about Chiari. I don’t know if I’m actually sick with a headache, or if this is really a brain thing that is causing me pain. It drives me crazy, because I’m not a hypochondriac and try not to complain about feeling bad....

Mini Journal: Me and Chiari Day 1

*Some of this post has been borrowed from my other site, Slightly Tilted Life. Two things about me you may not realize: I have a brain. I have proof of this. Not only do I have a brain, it’s a little too big for my head. I have what is called a chiari (key-r-e) malformation. I like the name. I mean, if I’m going to have a malformation, at least the name is fun to say and it’s kind of pretty. It’s not like “grotesque gnarled horned knee malformation” or anything. Basically, it means my cerebellar tonsils are too long and crowd the foramen...

Well it is a new year and we have made it our resolution to be fit again! Am I right?!  Actually, we try to stay fit all year, but often get a little distracted. What is the Paleo Diet?

What is the Paleo Diet?

The paleo diet is called the “caveman diet” for a good reason. The underlying premise is that if a caveman didn’t eat it, neither should you. Meats, fish, nuts, leafy greens, veggies, and seeds get a big thumbs up, but you’ll have to give up pasta, cereal, and candy. The good news is that this means no calorie counting. The bad news is that it may be hard for you to give up food that you may be leaning on as a major part of your every day diet. Maybe I shouldn’t say diet…it’s not really a...

Stretches for Tight Hip Flexors

Leg day is my favorite day. My upper body doesn’t take much to stay in pretty good shape, but my lower body is a different story. (Thanks, genetics!) After all of those hard leg days, my right hip started to cramp and hurt at night and that’s when I realized…stretching is important. Tight hip flexors can bring many problems, including terrible back pain and mobility issues. Even if you are an active person, your hip flexors may be tight. The hips play a key role in stability and strength, and stretching them is vital. These...
